John Carter of Mars up and away on his Skydiver Submarine

As it was my birthday  I   recently bought  from a charity shop    two books in one  Edgar rice Burroughs   The Mastermind of Mars  and Fighting  Man of Mars   of the later  books in his Mars series

I first read the original Mars Books Princess , Gods, Warlord , Chessman ,Thuvia   when I was  about twelve  and had worked out the basic plot  by  Warlord of mars

John Carter of Mars  swordsman in muscle harness   tracked down his kidnapped princess  to yet another  undiscovered Martian city ruled by a tyrant  hero  thrown into pits and escaping  from pits , tied up  beautiful princess is  rescued    ending  with  tyrant  toppled in sword fight   and replaced by his exiled  relative who JC of M  had saved from death earlier.

It seemed to be  the easiest way  for John Carter  to make friends  .

Over the years  I found that   Manator,  Zodanga   and Odar   all merged into one  and the   great white apes   and  allied giant   insects ended up fighting yellow men

Mastermind of Mars  involved  a  1920s variation  on the  sword wielding  a newer earth  born  hero  seeking his kidnapped princess in a  more gothic  undiscovered  Mars  of   brain transplants  stolen bodies  and mad scientist

Fighting  Man  of Mars  a very 1930s  Mars  the adventures  of a  Martian  Native ordinary Joe  saving   at least three  kidnapped princesses   tied up by   mad  tyrant   and  against a backdrop of yet another dead sea bottom city where    mad scientist   makes   mad tyrants secret  weapons   and invisibility cloaks.

I should  get out my  old  John Carter Mars  books  again

Another   childhood TV  space  series  I  remember was UFO   set in  the far future of 1980 and based around the secret government agency  S.H.A.D.O   as in all far future organisations  funded  by one shilling in every pound

UFO  was an early TV tie in   and  some of my earliest toys  were UFO  technology  the  missile  firing  moon base  ice lolly  shaped  interceptor   backed up by what was to me the  boring toys  of the  "mobile one" tracked missile  firing  garbage  truck  like tank   and Commander Straker's   ordinary looking  executive automobile  which did not fire anything.

One toy missing from this 1970s UFO   Dinky series  was  the toy  I always wanted at the time but discovered was  now  available  forty years  after  I really wanted one

That of the  Sky diver  submarine   the  supersonic  fighter  plane   "Sky"  launched under water  from the  submarine  "Diver"

Launched to  its own  varaition on the shows  teleprinter disco beat   "Sky"   looked  like a  combination of F86  and  Bachem 349A Natter   came   spectacularly out of the ocean,  flew around briefly  like a bad tempered wasp   before   blasting invading flying saucers out of the sky  with   a single shot   from its  underwing  rocket launchers  which also  doubled  as  engine pods.

How "Sky " returned to link up with the submerged "Diver" was a mystery  perhaps  it did the whole launch thing again but in  reverse.

Of all the  UFO  technological breakthroughs  Skydiver  was  the most true to life

in the tradition of  the submarine  aircraft carrier  from the Royal Navy's  ill fated  M2  biplane  fighter equipped   submarine ( M2  itself converted  from  a  submarine armed with 12 inch  battleship gun ) from the 1920s  to the  planned squadrons of   Convair Sea  Darts  stored  in the three  hangar decks   of    9000 ton  Atomic submarines designed to surface  at the north pole  and intercept incoming  Soviet bombers  coming in low over the arctic circle .

On the  job front  it is a  year this week since I last taught  full time and  having found nowhere  new  I am   still  bitter about redundancy, loss of regular income and   miss  the working week.

Despite  the opportunity  being in  IT training  my last interviewers   in   their questions  concentrated more on what  I had  been doing in  this last year  post redundancy than what  I did  from 1997-2012

I still   get too many  messages  over the  year   in reply  to  me  even asking if any  learning  providers  want volunteers    "we are   completely fully staffed, but thank you for your enquiry and good luck for the future."

I  tried a number of  times  in the last week to  add  this   new post to my  blog   but  had connection problems  and   error messages every time I tried

 so some delay updating

Astrolabe alien views A photo page

Astrolabe alien views  A photo page

So still redundant   after a year  and  find  that  despite having  college level   further education teaching qualifications -  It was all a  lot of paper  and all a lot of study to get me  here - for what!

I am   not really interview  wise  coming across as  right candidate  having taught    disabled Adults  not  emotionalist  behaviourist  Teenagers   which is the new funding fashion  and I  am   too   Short and too   Rick! ( see  my Moranis persona pre august   post)

After all at  interview  I  did not even mention my  second published  e book  of Poetry    and have  new poems for third book  nor  mentioned   my Alien Astronomy hobby

Star  dreaming  i suppose it is an excuse to leave Earth  that  has so little  to offer  me now

After all as  one of my  readers commented  re  pirates life  my poetry   and indeed  everything  since redundancy  from a once beloved  job I admit I had  2/10  job satisfaction in at the end "a metaphor for escapism, and a desire to leave behind the landlubbers because of a negative experience.

The Hawaiian star  compass was easy to do as  i used  the main north  constellations ie Pleiades and the main west summer constellations ie Vega    and  now working on alien astrolabe remapping  constellations

This post   is more  of a photopage  blog   using   astrofly  proper motion  calculator    and  hipparcos  catalogue

see images  of what  I  call   the  Stormhorse  constellation of Alpha Centauri  that stretches from  Eridanus  to Canis Major   through Aurigae  and on to Gemini, Taurus and ending in  Cetus   surrounding  the Archer  (Orion)  and our  Sun as seen  in  the  Harper  constellation(Cassiopeia)

I  did not draw lines  as  the  alien constellations shapes can be made out for example Harper   is  traditional   two of  the old 48   Perseus and  Cassiopeia  but  joined to make  up  a  biped  harpist  linked  by  the  bright  star which  is our sun

The  primeval  Stormhorses are  the  archetype   mythological   Therian monster

the Archer  and Harper  Creation  hero figures

Other starry nights  other  escapisms

sort of under the Moons  of Mars  without any  my wife next star issues

here  for example are a  few  astrofly views of alien skies in Orion  as seen  Tau Cygni,  Electra   70  Ophiuchi    with changing if familiar star patterns  and  to  there anyone watching   different star  myths   or then again  perhaps   only night worms  and  night  fungi  look up from there

Time Reversibility, Einsteinian physics and a Confusion of Greek Mythology

I recently posted to a poem review  forum   My February 2013  written poem  on   temporal paradoxes ,  alternative  Earths   and  theories   about  time in modern  physics    see  below  but was surprised   that every  reader comment had   confused  the  subject matter  with  it being yet another of my Greek   mythology  epics.

I know my poetry has  been referred to as having "hidden meaning, double meaning and  downright unknown confusing  meaning"  but thus time my intended meaning escaped the readers

time and the  triumph of reversibility

What is history

straight pillars

broken pillars

talk over coffee in a cracked galaxy

or it happened  in an avenue of era statues

finding names for bases  and  fall apart greening strangers

only one monument remains

a same cube Delian throne scribed with dart letters of gold

" Time And The Triumph Of  Reversibility "

no  one  was here

their grandfathers were never born and that was the paradox

pennies in a  tide well

coins from dead mans eyes

brass cent of lost causes and if emperors

metals  from the city of  Sakria in  the country of Laxaria

time and the  triumph of reversibility   mark littler  2013

comments  1-3  that miss  my point  completely

"A short but very well written piece based on the Greek war, the imagery you have interwoven in this makes one want to delve more in to this history, which was personally never and interest of mine, but I certainly enjoyed the reading of this and particularly the last stanza...Truly a great piece of work"

"The best piece I have read from you, mark.

Great epic tale full of mystique and mammoth characters"

"I'm not so clued up on mythology, so some of the references may have escaped me, but I think the overarching theme seems to be more universal and timeless, and I couldn't help but be reminded of the old adage about history being written by the winners of wars."

The  mythic  direction of these fair honest   critical reader  comments  must have picked upon Delian  not  from Delos  or any remotely  Greek   it is   the  famous Delian   cube problem  an   exercise  in mathematical  doubling

the pennies ....   coins....   and  brass  cent  of lost causes and if emperors  are  symbolic  not of Charon  boats   but of  other   alternative  existences  appearing as  the new reality as   our  previous  real Time and  past real  history  changes   due to a single temporal   paradox  note "only one monument remains.....  and  no one was here ........ PARADOX   of  grandfathers never born

"straight pillars  broken pillars"    well  that is  from  Ray Bradbury's  Martian Chronicles    when  Tomas meets  the  long dead Martian  who sees  the ruins  of dead Martian cities as  they are  in his  time

my symbolism is that  what we see  is simultaneously  broken and straight pillars

"Sakria"   and "Laxaria"  are not   Mycenaean  towns  but derive  from  Charles Fort   and one of his newspaper cuttings about a  man  suddenly appearing out of nowhere   in  pre  war  Europe   wearing a strange costume  and talking  an  unknown language  claiming to be  from  "Laxaria  a  city  in the country  of Sakria"  i  changed them  around  as it sounds better  to symbolise   that  they are now and have  always been post temporal  paradox    our own  Nations  and  our only  reality.

I recently posted  "A  Pirates life" ( see blog 1st August) to the  same poem  review  site  expect  it will remind   my traditional   readers  of "Telemachus  on the island of Apollohanes"

Now know why  I scrapped  the July 2013  weighty epics  "Argo,  Ariadne,  Medea" and    "Venus  ridiculed at the court of  Amor"

My latest poem " Atom  Spider versus Radio Killer  Space Mystery" is  inspired by Golden Age Comic Books  so  even in that unintentionally  the Super Heroes  may  be  taken as  Greek ones

Redundant and another failed job interview

This week is  the first anniversary  of my last teaching  of a  Adult Education Class  and   I find myself  looking  back on it  like it was  Gettysburg.

Redundancy   ended all that   I had an interview  yesterday   for  learning and progression mentor  for a local college ( where I actually studied for my teaching  qualification) for    a job which  i did   for many years   and  won a national award   in the area

Once again rejected  told it was a strong field   and many  competitive candidates  on the day     not really one for college staff cliques

I think  I come across  as  too much  like Rick Moranis from Ghostbusters

I used to   never consider the future except  in  a  sci fi   world  of  flying   glass pyramids   but now  at 48  think of the future as unemployment,   poverty and illness.

Once  I looked forward  to hope and  a  stable  everyday  job now it is all   penny saving  and  tinned food  as I honestly expect  to   have to  stay at home with my  books and  my  teaching awards to end up  dying like the Collyer brothers

Incidentally  mention  of  wealthy  former professionals  turned recluses surrounded by books and clutter  re  the Collyers  does sound increasingly  like my life.

When I was  nearby her home  for an interview  I called on  my nonagenarian  Aunt who  in course of conversation asked " who I  was  leaving my  money to   and had  I left a will"  saying  "you don't want to leave your money to  ............  naming my other cousins   and eventually  turned the talk of wills and inheritance to   her  own  grandson - "yes  I suppose I  eventually my  money  will  go to   him"  I remember saying

how odd  for a 94  year old to be so concerned about my health and my  will !!

I  did mention making a will  in favour of my  friend but  she told me  " do not  leave your books  to  me!!  they will go in a dumpster !   (what all 7000 +  of them ) just  leave me your   money! "

so nice people are  concerned for my  health   and who  inherits  after I am gone

Am  I gone yet?

A Pirates Life

when I  was as young
I  ended my first  romance
walking into the sea
walking out of the sea

benbow roving
bell bow  wrenching
at company with life  living freemen
never ending pirates
pirates  pages
pirate  type

Away to sailors  Main
tall and a master
billows
splinters
gurdy fiddles

lost my yester clothes  to a  garb  silk voyager
intaglio magnifico
napes a noodle

cabin  over the head
head  on the spit
spit in the eye

rolling  'rahing
hanging peg patch
Hook and Captain Hand

all gentlemen  in dogs
looking like a poor  cat artists chalky

all gentlemen in drakes
seven quests  for  Freuds  Fiends and Enemies
who insulted his saintly mother
and made him dream  of beetles

made  him bug to ventures
crew  dentist,  cake baker  and window makers   in a crack carrack galleass
passing from the ungunned kings ship  "Tubby Worry"
modernized to private  enterprise and criminalities
good ship  "Bonny Bloody and more  Bloody"
just call it the Bloody
some thrill  in saying the ship!
walk the  deck saying the ship!
