read a coffee table book  called the great modern poets  noticed a few things
firstly   few of them ever had  decent  real jobs  ie wallace stevens  insurance, carlos williams doctor  and  as the  century progressed  the majority were  either  full time poetry bums  with degrees in english literature  or  to a greater  extent professors of english literature  or  profesors of poetry and creative writing
i had  never heard of many of them
Morgan, Mew,Sisson, Fenton, Davie, Ashberry, Baxter, Kinsella, Boland
and what  was there was schools, structured and stressed
all over language  oh oh oh whoah whoah whoah  dull dullish  dull
none of these  greats   an influence on me with their  clique  backslapping meter pentameter  boredom of styles
did  I  write A pirates life  wondering what  Robert Lowell  woud think of  it ?
 I  think not
